Bell Federal Credit Union was chartered as Sioux Falls Bell Federal Credit Union in October, 1939 by the employees of Northwestern Bell Telephone Company and their families. Two credit union employees conducted business in the basement of the Northwestern Bell Telephone Company office building between the hours of 12:00—12:30 and 5:00-5:30 p.m. 6 days a month. Sioux Falls Bell Federal Credit Union began with 66 members and a total of $211.00 in share deposits.
In the ensuing years, many more groups saw the financial advantage of a member-owned, not-for-profit credit union and our Select Employee Groups grew to over 90. Our membership grew to its current level of over 5,000.
In 2009, Sioux Falls Bell Federal Credit Union changed it’s name to Bell Federal Credit Union. Our intent on becoming Bell Federal Credit Union was to honor our roots, our history and past successes, while we expand membership opportunity and financial services to individuals who live, work, worship or attend school in Minnehaha or Lincoln Counties.
Bell Federal Credit Union is proud to be a part of the credit union heritage as well as the communities in which we serve. Our growth continues to spread the cooperative spirit and financial independence of our members.
